Modern airbags are effective devices for reducing injuries to a vehicle’s occupants in a crash. However, their operation and the conditions under which they deploy are not widely understood, often leading to questions of whether an airbag’s deployment (or non-deployment) was ‘proper’ in the case under investigation. Since airbags deploy in just a few milliseconds and therefore at high velocities, it is necessary that their deployment be designed so as to maximize the protection they offer. It is also necessary to ensure that they do not deploy In cases where their deployment itself may cause harm to the occupants. Brief overview of parameters governing a vehicle’s decision to deploy its airbags is presented.
